Just like your car or truck, there are many kinds of golf cart tires available to suit the many needs of golf car owners. The versatility of these compact carts is what makes them so popular as a vehicle, both on the fairways and off, and it’s that versatility that creates a need for diverse kinds of tires. Knowing what your needs are for your cart is crucial when it comes time to purchase new tires.

Turf

Your golf cart likely had turf tires, or sometimes called street tires, when you first purchased it. These standard-issue tires are made for the soft terrain of the golf course, as they are rounder, more balanced, and they are made with softer rubber and have a shallower tread so as not to damage the turf. These are ideal for domestic settings, like streets and grass, but poorly suited for utility or off-road types of driving.

Off-Road

The most aggressive tread is the knobby off-road tires. These are built for traveling over mud and dirt and gravel. The knobs on the tread grip the terrain and maximize your vehicle’s effectiveness in your adventure, similar to the tires you might find on a quad. As these tires are specialized for difficult terrain, do not use them for street driving or golf course driving, or the knobs in the tread will quickly wear down on the pavement and they will rip apart the grass and turf.

All-Terrain

All-Terrain tires might be a good fit for you if you are not sure what type of terrain your golf car will be used on, or if you anticipate using your golf cart on a wide variety of terrains. These tires offer the best of all styles. The tread has more depth than turf tires, so it can grip the terrain and provide adequate support to your vehicle in mild off-road driving - such as on a dirt road or around a campsite - but it is still smooth enough to handle sidewalks and roads well. Be wary driving these on grass, however; while they might be smooth enough to handle a hearty front lawn, they will tear up the delicate fairway.
